Felt ornaments are my favorite. I love how retro they feel. They’re the perfect craft for making while watching a fun holiday movie.

Notes About Supplies

Felt. I used both acrylic and wool blend felt for this project. Use the nicer felt if you want these ornaments to be heirloom quality. It cuts much easier and is less stretchy, which makes it nicer to sew with.

I used both types because I don’t have them separated, and I picked my felt based on the color rather than the type. I pick up felt every time I’m at the craft store so that I have a nice assortment for crafting.

Just don’t pick the stiff felt. It’s not easy to sew.

Cricut Maker. I cut the felt with my Cricut Maker 3 with the rotary blade. Unfortunately, the rotary blade only works with Cricut Makers (versus the Explore or Joy). I have not experimented with other machines, so I’m not sure if it’s possible.

However, it is possible to cut these ornaments by hand. That has always been my go-to method before I got a Cricut. I’m including a printable version with the SVG file download below.

Fabric Mat. Felt will RUIN this mat, so it’s best to use an old mat or have one that is designated for felt only.

I used my mat for about 20 projects before it got all gummed up. Since it was ruined anyway, I cleaned it with dish soap and a scrub brush, which everyone says not to do. It somewhat restored the mat, but I think I’ll only get about 5 more projects out of it before I need to clean it again.

Embroidery Floss. It’s not necessary to match the colors exactly. As long as it’s close enough, it works. For embroidery, I like a large needle so it’s easy to thread. Separated the thread into 2 stand pieces to make it easier to work with. Use a smaller needle and a single piece of thread for the beads.

I used a blanket stitch for almost everything, but you can use whatever you want. If I made them again, I would use a backstitch or a running stitch to attach the colored pieces to the backgrounds.

Stuffing. I stuffed some of the ornaments to make them a bit more 3D, but it’s not necessary. Some of them are just too small. (You can always resize them before you cut them out, though!)

Directions:

  1. Upload the design as usual.
  2. Recolor if necessary. This helps to organize which color of felt to use.
  3. On the mat setup page, be sure that the correct size of material is chosen. Acrylic felt is typically 8.5″ x 11″.
  4. Choose acrylic felt from the materials list.
  5. Insert the rotary blade.
  6. Cut each color.
  7. When removing the felt from the mat, be careful not to stretch it. I used the spatula tool to make it easier. removing felt from cricut mat
  8. Place small bits in a small container to prevent them from getting lost.

Sewing the Felt Ornaments

  1. Use embroidery floss to sew the colored felt pieces to the white background pieces. I used a blanket stitch and 2 strands of embroidery floss.sewing felt pieces to make ornaments
  2. Add beads and sequins if desired. felt candy ornaments with beads
  3. Attach a loop of ribbon to the back piece.
  4. Sew the backs onto the pieces that you just made in steps 1-2. I used a blanket stitch.
  5. If you’re going to stuff them, leave a small opening. Use a small skewer to shove the batting in. It may help to roll the batting up to get it in small areas. stuffing felt ornaments
  6. Finish sewing the opening when you’re done stuffing them. sewing felt ornaments closed
  7. Repeat for all of the ornaments. finished felt candy ornament
