I love working with infusible ink. It’s so easy to use, and I love how it melts into the surface of the blanks. As much as I love vinyl, the infusible ink creates a more polished look, in my opinion.
The Cricut blank options are a bit limited, but luckily, infusible ink works with any sublimation blank. These ornament blanks are ceramic and so lovely to work with.
Infusible ink must be used with a heat press. A household iron doesn’t get hot enough to fuse the ink to the surface properly. It also must be used with sublimation blanks with a special coating allowing them to accept the ink.
How to Make Infusible Ink Ornaments
Supplies Needed:
- Sublimation Ornament Blanks
- Infusible Ink Sheets ( I used cherry red, rose pink, mint, and bright teal)
- Cricut (I used my Cricut Maker 3)
- Cricut Heat Press
- Heat Press Mat
- Ribbon (for hanging)
Directions
- Upload the design as usual.
- Resize the designs if needed. The ornaments are about 3″, but there are holes for hanging. I let my design go over the holes, but they need to be smaller if you want to avoid them.
- Recolor as needed.
- Click Make when the design is ready.
- On the mat set up page, mirror the design. It’s not crucial for these designs, but it’s good practice for infusible ink.
- Choose “infusible ink sheets” from the materials list.
- Cut a piece of infusible ink sheet a little larger than the design.
- Place it on the mat, pattern side up. I used some washi tape to secure it because infusible ink is so thick, and my mat is old.
- Cut as usual.
- Unload the mat when finished.
Making the Ornaments
- Weed the design. It’s not necessary to use tools. Curling the paper usually helps the unwanted part pop away from the backer sheet.
- Clean the ornaments to remove oil and fingerprints. I like to use rubbing alcohol.
- Place the weeded design onto the ornaments. The backer sheet is usually sufficient to secure it to the ornament, but you may need heat transfer tape if it’s not.
- Preheat the heat press. The ornament blanks I used needed to be heated to 360º for 240 seconds.
- Place the ornaments onto the heat press mat.
- Use a sheet of butcher paper over the ornaments to protect the heat press. (Infusible ink sheets are included in the box.)
- When the heat press beeps, place the heat press over the ornaments. Press the start button.
- Hold the heat press on the ornaments for 240 seconds.
- When the timer goes off, remove the heat press and place it back in the cradle.
- The ornaments will be hot, so be careful. Let them cool before removing the sheet.
- Add ribbons for hanging.
